Our Mascot
The Osprey has strong ties to our local community. Not only is it a “sea hawk” commonly found along our beautiful coastline, but it is also the name of one of the newest aircraft stationed at USMC Air Station New River. This connection makes it a meaningful symbol of our area—and we are proud to be OVS Ospreys!
About the Osprey (Sea Hawk)
Ospreys are large, uniquely shaped birds known for their:
- Slender bodies
- Long, narrow wings
- Long legs
When in flight, ospreys create a distinctive M-shape with their wings when viewed from below. They are almost always found near water with abundant fish, making them a common sight along the North Carolina coast, as well as nearby rivers and lakes.
Ospreys are incredible hunters:
- They hover over water, scanning for fish
- Once spotted, they dive feet-first into the water
- They can dive at speeds of 30 mph, reaching up to 50 mph upon impact
- After catching their prey, they lift off from the water and shake vigorously to remove excess water
The V-22 Osprey
The V-22 Osprey aircraft reflects the same strength and versatility:
- A multi-engine, dual-piloted aircraft
- Capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL)
- Designed for combat, combat support, and special operations missions worldwide
