Our Mascot

OVS Main Logo

The Osprey has ties to our community as a sea hawk that lives along our coast AND is the name of one of the newest aircraft on USMC Air Station-New River!  This is a great representation of our area, and we are all proud to be OVS Osprey!

Ospreys are very large, distinctively shaped sea hawks. Despite their size, their bodies are slender, with long, narrow wings and long legs. Ospreys fly with a marked kink in their wings, making an M-shape when seen from below.  The osprey is almost always found near water containing abundant fish populations and can be seen along the coast of North Carolina, and in rivers and lakes. Ospreys are excellent hunters of fish. They usually hover over the water until a fish nears the surface and then dive feet first, grasping the fish with their talons. Ospreys can dive at 30 miles per hour and have been clocked at 50 miles per hour by the time they hit the water. They can take off from the water and can be seen shaking vigorously to remove water after they are airborne.
