The Learning Coach

Learning Coach:

The Learning Coach is the parent/guardian or their designee who assists their child in navigating and completing work in the Virtual setting. Learning Coaches are not expected to teach the material. The learning coach’s role includes supporting their child and assisting them in communicating with their teacher, maintaining pace, providing encouragement, and notifying their child’s teacher if an issue arises. The responsibilities of a Learning Coach will vary depending on the age and ability level of their child. Below are expectations to ensure the Learning Coach is supportive:

  • Be able and willing to work directly with the student 3-5 hours daily to ensure consistent progress.
  • Provide an adequate study area that is conducive to learning with few distractions.
  • Ensure that internet connections are available and maintained for the duration of the student’s enrollment.
  • Agree to be responsible for promoting and reinforcing good learning habits.
  • Maintain a calm and patient demeanor when the child has questions or begins to show frustration.
  • Attend online and in person orientation and other informational sessions.
  • Ensure that students complete the daily assigned tasks.
  • Ensure that their students are adequately supervised during the day.
  • Manage time effectively.
  • Complete and return all required forms and complete all required assessments in a timely and prompt manner.
  • Ensure that contact information is kept current and communicate any changes to the OVSS office.
  • Review the Week at a Glance for each class with the student, check the school website for school-wide announcements and follow through with requests promptly.
  • Respond to email and phone messages from the teacher/school within 24 hours to ensure the timeliness of all communications.
  • Maintain a working phone number which can be used by teachers and the school office for regular contact.
  • Agree to have the student participate in all state-mandated in-person testing and make all necessary travel arrangements to ensure that their students attend and complete the assessments.
  • Read all introductory material and ensure that students follow the guidelines outlined in the beginning of the course.
  • Maintain appropriate pace in all courses as indicated by the teacher’s directions.
  • Ensure safe, productive, and legal use of the internet.
  • Alert the child’s teacher if the child begins to struggle with a concept.
  • Communicate with your child’s teacher regularly.
